Starr’s Mill’s Ryan Peurifoy goes up to catch a pass with Sandy Creek’s Jewel Brown (#10) and Ronnie Blackmon covering. The game may not have counted, but you couldn't tell by the intensity on the field. Sandy Creek hosted Starr's Mill Thursday night in a preseason exhibition game, looking sharp and ready for opening night.
The Patriots offense was dominant, chewing up massive yards with their ground game. Whichever running back toted the rock, they looked good. Sophomore Delvin Weems was the first to shine, opening the scoring with a four yard touchdown on the Patriots' first offensive drive. Fellow sophomore Eric Swinney picked up his own score on the Patriots' second drive on a nifty cutback from nine yards out.
Starr's Mill's offense got rolling as the first quarter turned to the second. New starting quarterback Kyle Moseley made a nice connection with Dion Munerlyn for 28 yards on a rollout. That would set up a Panther field goal to narrow the deficit to 14-3.
The Panthers looked ready to steal the game's momentum when on the next series Seth White picked off a deflected Patriot pass. Unfortunately for them Sandy Creek quickly got revenge. On the next play, Wesley Sullivan intercepted a pass at midfield and took it back to the house.
Starr's Mill would piece together one more solid drive, but a missed field goal kept the score at 21-3 heading into halftime as the starters exited the game.
Both teams will open the regular season on Friday, August 31. Sandy Creek starts on the road at Banneker. Starr's Mill opens up hosting North Cobb. |
