2012-11-20

By Christopher Dunn

With another exciting season in the books it is time to honor the 2012 Fayette Newspaper All-County Softball Team.
The Whitewater Lady Wildcats carried the flag for the county, racing all the way to the Final Four. While the other teams may not have reached the postseason dreams they were aiming for, it was still a fun season.
While there are many talented softball players around town, there was one obvious choice for top honors. Mackenzie Toler of Whitewater is the hands down pick for Player of the Year. Toler, a Mississippi State signee, was dominant both on the mound and with a bat in her hand. As a pitcher, Toler racked up a 17-5 record with a sparkling .602 ERA with 115 strikeouts in 128 innings. At the plate Toler sported an amazing .620 batting average with seven home runs, 45 RBI, and 42 walks in 92 at bats.
Robert Townsend earns Coach of the Year honors for leading the Wildcats to such a stellar season. Sporting a 27-12 record, Townsend's Cats had a truly excellent run.
Toler is joined on the mound for the All-County team by teammate Katie Cannington and Hannah Newton of McIntosh. Cannington notched seven wins with a 2.71 ERA to go along with a .458 batting average and 55 stolen bases. Newton also dominated at the plate with a .356 average, one home run, and 29 RBI.
Catcher Emily Pauley of McIntosh lines up behind the dish. Pauley hit .406 with five home runs and 20 RBI in 64 at bats.
The infield for the All-County team is incredibly impressive. Dana Horgan of Fayette County, Gabby Hunt of Whitewater,
Natalie Orcutt of Starr's Mill, and Asia Wiles of Our Lady of Mercy make up the crew.
Horgan posted a .475 average with nine RBI in 40 at bats. Hunt notched a .418 average with 33 RBI in 122 at bats. Orcutt swung for .414 with one home run and 19 RBI while adding 25 stolen bases on 26 attempts. Wiles was second only to Toler in batting average for the county with a blistering .519 mark to go along with 13 RBI.
The All-County team outfield is made up of Annisah Smith of Fayette County, Hannah Thomason of Whitewater, and Sarah Flanders of Starr's Mill.
Smith posted an impressive .348 average for the Tigers. Thomason hit .404 and swiped 31 bases in 99 at bats. Flanders swung for a .388 mark with 15 RBI and 17 stolen bases.
With an impressive All-County team a number of excellent players remain as Honorable Mentions.
Whitewater earned marks for Rebecca Stallings, Rachel Williamson, Kim Perkins, Kylee Southers, Brielle Grubbs, and Maci Townsend.
Starr's Mill gets honors for Ashley Powers, Hailey Clark, Katie Ressl, Torie Legere, Sam Laing, and Ellie Ressl.
Sandy Creek gets the nod for Jazmyne Taylor and Autumn Shirah.
