Michael Hernandez, Caliyah Thornton and Kennedy Austin from Lynn Gunter\'s first grade class show off their poster advertisin It has been more than a month since Hurricane Sandy tore through the Northeast, but many damaged schools are still trying to recover.
Thousands of students and teachers lost most, if not all, of their classroom supplies. After learning about the needs that still exist, the first grade classes at Inman Elementary decided to organize a school supply drive. Teachers Lynn Gunter and Jocelyn Robbins are leading the project.
“We are so blessed here at Inman that we still have a school and materials for learning. We, in first grade, are calling out to all our fellow Inman Eagles bring in any school materials that they can share with other kids in need,” says Gunter.
The campaign to collect the supplies has just kicked-off. Posters designed by the first grade students have been placed throughout the school to promote the drive. Some of the students recently appeared on the Eagle School TV morning announcements to talk about items that are needed such as erasers, notebooks, glue sticks, markers, crayons, highlighters and index cards.
Students will collect the supplies through December 20. The donations will be sent to a flooded school that has relocated to new facility.
