Diabetes Support Group meets second Tuesday of every other month; beginning January 8, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Piedmont Fayette Hospital in the 1279 Building Conference Room B. Hosted by Denise Bennett, MS, RD, LD, CDE Clinical Lead, Diabetes Education. The support group provides ongoing education, networking and support for people affected by diabetes. Peachtree City’s annual Christmas Tree Recycling will be held on Saturday, January 5. Bring your tree (all decorations and tinsel removed, no flocked trees) to the Peachtree City Recycling Center (Rockaway Road at Highway 74 South), the Peachtree City Home Depot, or the Kedron Shopping Center between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.

Foster Parents Wanted! Fayette Youth Protection Home’s Foster Care Program “Grace For Children” is looking for adults who wish to open their homes to children in need. DivorceCare is a weekly seminar and support group for people who are separated or divorced. It's a place where you can be around people who understand what you are feeling. It's a place where you can hear valuable information about ways to heal from the hurt of divorce. If you know someone going through divorce, make sure he or she knows about DivorceCare. It might just be the best thing you can do to help. The new session will begin on Jan.y 9. This workshop includes practical information about understanding dementia, emotional issues, legal/financial concerns, community resources, and using the healthcare system. Brooks United Methodist Church in Brooks, will offer Beginner Cha Cha lessons starting Jan. 12, through Feb. 2, from 7 until 8:30 p.m. The cost is $35 per person for the entire four week session. For those who do not want to make a commitment, they can try a class for only $10 per person, per class, as a drop-in. The Cha Cha will be taught from the ground-up in order to give students confidence on the dance floor. These classes have two well experienced instructors, with 40 combined years of dancing experience and teaching, with some of the latest moves. These classes are ideally located to Brooks, Senoia, Griffin, Fayetteville, Newnan and Peachtree City. The Peachtree City Library will host Poets Susan Lilley and Phillip Deaver, who will read poems from their most recent collections, Jan. 18, at 7:30 p.m. Ms. Lilley received a 2009 Rita Dove Award, teaches English at Trinity Preparatory School, and is an adjunct Professor at Rollins College in Winter Park, Florida. Mr. Deaver’s most recent book of poems is How Men Pray. He is an English professor and Writer in Residence at Rollins College and teaches at Spaulding University. The Fayette County Teen Republicans will be having there first meeting of 2013, January 19, at 12 p.m. in the Whitewater Creek Amenities Center Club Room. American Legion Post 50 will be holding their "Oratorical Contest" on Jan. 20, at 1 p.m. Location will be the Commemorative Air Force hanger, Falcon Field, PTC. The Fayette County Branch of the NAACP and the Fayette County Board of Education present the annual MLK parade and commemorative program on Jan. 21. The pre-parade breakfast will be served from 8 – 9 a.m. in the Fayette County High School parking lot, with the parade beginning at 9 a.m. and ending at the F. A. Sams Auditorium (205 LaFayette Drive, Fayetteville) for the program at 10:30 a.m. The keynote speaker will be Julius Pryor III and the theme for 2013 is, “Advancing the Call for Civility and Civil Rights." The 21st Annual Kiwanis Pancake Breakfast will be held on Jan. 26, from 7 a.m. – 1 p.m., at McIntosh High School. Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Program Registration – Now through Feb. 26. The PTC Police will host a CERT class on Thursday evenings, 6:30 – 9:00 p.m., for 10 weeks beginning March 7. Learn vital information to prepare your family for hazards that may affect our community, including basic disaster response skills, fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations. The program culminates in a mock disaster exercise where participants put into action what they have learned throughout the program. There is no charge to attend the class; however, class size will be limited to 25 participants. Southern Conservation Trust is celebrating 20 years of providing land protection in Fayette County and invites the community to help celebrate their successful land protection projects past, present, and future on Jan. 27, at the Trust’s at Shakerag Knoll (Gazebo, 192 McIntosh Trail). An open house will be held from 2 – 5 p.m., with a special presentation by Scott Rowland at 3 p.m. on his adventures in Antarctica.

The South Metro Rose Society will meet Jan. 28 at 7 p.m. at The Heritage Bank at 440 N. Jeff Davis Drive in Fayetteville. All rose growers from novice to expert are invited to attend free of charge. This month’s program features Master Rosarian Cindy Dale speaking on “Top Performing Roses for North Georgia.” Her colorful Power Point program will describe many varieties of garden roses that are the most hardy, disease resistant, and produce the most blooms in this part of the country. Members will be encouraged to share their thoughts and add their favorites to the list. As usual, Master and Consulting Rosarians will be available to answer questions on any rose topic. Providence United Methodist Church and Heritage Christian Church are teaming up to offer a new 13-week DivorceCare and DivorceCare for Kids (DC4K) session beginning Jan. 28, at Providence UMC. Providence is located at 592 Bernhard Road in Fayetteville. Both programs are free and a nursery is also available for those children not participating in the DC4K. DC4K is for children ages 5 yrs - 12 yrs. Friends of the Library Poetry Contest Submissions – Now through March 1. The Friends of the PTC Library’s Third Annual Poetry Contest is underway, with the theme, “Our World, Our Community.” Cash prizes of $100 will be awarded in three categories: 1) students grades 1 – 6; 2) students grades 7 – 12; and 3) adults 18+. There is a $10 entry fee for up to three poems. Entries due by 5 p.m. on March 1. Civil Air Patrol Open House on Jan. 31, from 6:30 – 9:00 p.m., at the Peachtree City United Methodist Church on Robinson Rd (downstairs in the basement). Civil Air Patrol Squadron GA-116 invites interested members to attend and learn more about the squadron and its three mission areas: aerospace education, cadet programs, and emergency services.
