Helen Irene Smith, age 87, passed away on June 27, 2013. She was born on June 19, 1926 in Atlanta, Georgia. Her parents were Eugene and Maybell Fetter.
She was preceded in death by her younger son, Dozier, Jr., and sister, Frances Lambert.
She is survived by her husband, Dozier P. Smith, Sr., her son and daughter-in-law, Lyn and Barb Smith of Gainesville; daughter and son-in-law, Terri and Bubba Newman of Fayetteville; granddaughter and husband, Meredith and Chad Earnest of Fayetteville; and great-granddaughter, Callie Marie Earnest, born on June 7, 2013, who regretfully never got to meet her great-grandmother.
Helen and Dozier celebrated 62 years of marriage on June 5, 2013. She worked with her husband for many years in their home office in their insurance business. Helen became a Christian early in her childhood from her grandmother’s teachings. She moved her membership to West End Baptist Church in her early 20’s and was married to Dozier on June 5, 1951 by Dr. John Waldrop, Pastor at West End Baptist. At the age of 30, Helen and Dozier moved their membership to Sylvan Hills Baptist Church, where they were active members for 56 years until that church closed. Helen loved to sing and was a member of the choir. Through the years, she served in many positions including the Finance Committee and church secretary. In 2012 their membership was moved to Jefferson Avenue Baptist Church.
Helen and her husband enjoyed many trips and cruises all over the world. Helen’s favorite sport was bowling for many years until she began to have knee problems. She loved the Atlanta Braves and enjoyed going to the games with her older son, Lyn, or with her best friend, Doris Schwab. She loved the color purple, and just about everything she wore was purple or lavender. No mother ever loved her children more than Helen Smith and her desire for their success and happiness in life. When her granddaughter, Meredith, was born in 1981, she became the love of her life, and they shared a very special bond. Helen was a very social person with many friends. She will be missed forever by her family and friends.
