It took over half the season but the Fayette County football team finally put together four full quarters of football en route to their first win of the season.
“I’m happy for the win,” said Tigers coach Mike Davis, whose team snapped a five game losing streak. “I happy because we finally played hard for four quarters.”
The Tigers pounded the visiting Columbus Blue Devils (1-5) by a final score of 40-6.
Fayette County’s offense was red hot behind the dynamic running of Jollyce Myrick, who rushed for 174 yards with two rushing scores. The passing game was also a focal point in the win for the Tigers as Davieon Nash’s only two completions of the game both went to receiver Ashton Jackson for touchdowns, a 40 yard bomb just before halftime and a six yard slant that came early in the fourth quarter. Keenan Morris also ran the ball hard for Fayette County and finished with 60 yards and a touchdown.
Myrick scored the first two touchdowns for the Tigers with a 65 yard burst of the middle and a 40 yard dash down the sideline.
“We’re (finally) healthy,” added Davis. “That’s the key for us. We got healthy at the right time.”
The Tigers defense pushed Columbus around. Were it not for a 70 yard screen pass from Derrick James to Essang Bassey that gave the Blue Devils the ball inside the 10 yard line, Dale Williams might not have punched the ball into the end zone from a yard out to make it a 7-6 score on Columbus’s first possession. But there were no more worries after that as the Tigers defense dug in on the Blue Devils and ultimately forced three turnovers, interceptions from Ashton Jackson and cornerback Robert Easterwood and a fumble recovery by linemen DeMarkus Trice.
“I’m looking forward to next week,” said Davis. “You get one in and you want to try and keep it going.”
Fayette County (1-5) will look to carry the momentum from this win with it on the road at LaGrange (2-4) this week.
