By Jimmie Haywood

Rena Jenkins and the Lady Wildcats are tied atop the region standings early in the basketball season.

The Whitewater boys basketball team has run off three straight wins after defeating Mt. Zion (1-6) in overtime on Tuesday behind a big time effort from Phil Cofer. Cofer who led the way for the Wildcats with 23 points and 18 rebounds.
Cofer has gone over his season averages of 18.2 points and 13.4 rebounds in each of the last two games, helping the Wildcats pull out back-to-back close victories after they narrowly defeated Forest Park 46-45 in the prior game.
Whitewater's latest victory improves their record to 5-1 overall with perfect 4-0 mark in the region.
The Whitewater girls basketball team snapped a three game losing streak with a tight win over Mt. Zion 47-45.
Jada Coggins led the way for the Lady Wildcats with 20 points and eight rebounds and Kaelyn Dugger finished with a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds.
Whitewater came out slow and by halftime found itself trailing 20-17. In the third quarter the Lady Wildcats outscored Mt. Zion 16-12 before ultimately hanging on in the fourth.
Whitewater coach Rashad Muhyee said that the team was playing nowhere near their potential during the three game slide that featured losses to Carrollton, Drew, and Forest Park.
“We play hard and we don’t get down on ourselves and we don’t stop fighting,” Muyee said. “We are in position to do some good things.”
The Lady Wildcats (3-4, 3-2) are now tied atop the region 4B-AAAAA with Starr’s Mill (5-3, 3-2).
Whitewater traveled to Mundy’s Mill on Friday where the Lady Wildcats will look to make it back-to-back wins when they face the Lady Tigers’ duo of Kelsee Arnold and Raiana who each score in double figures. The Wildcats are primed to take on a Tigers team (3-6; 2-3) that is riding a five game losing streak.
