Wilbur Elder, Jr.
Wilbur Elder, Jr., son of the late Wilbur Elder, Sr. and Cozzie Mae Tolbert Elder, was born December 4, 1936 at five a. m. in Coweta County. He was one of seven children of which one preceded him in death (Asberry). He was also preceded in death by his wife, Virginia.
He attended Moreland Elementary School in Moreland, Georgia.
He was employed by The Atlanta Gas Light Company with forty years and six months of dedicated service. He retired February 12, 1999, and was presented the Safe Hero Award by The Metro Region office in 1998.
Wilbur joined The Summer Hill Baptist Church at an early age under the pastorship of the late Rev. Paul Coleman. He loved the church and served in various capacities including the choir. He was ordained as a Deacon December 5, 1999, under the leadership of Rev. J. T. Coleman. The activities that he participated in throughout his growth and his obedience to the teachings by his mother created the path to his ultimate worship with many well known followers of Christ; and being a “mama’s boy” he did not want to disappoint her.
He sang with many groups throughout the south. He was the Master of Ceremony for many groups, and assisted singing groups. He also conducted work shops with Mr. Luther Barnes. In 1984 he was made Favorite Gospel “D. J.” of Radio Station WCOH.
Wilbur loved challenges, he fought a good fight until the end of his mission. He is happy and has won the prize.
He leaves to cherish his memory his sisters: Emma Elder of Stone Mountain, Lavonia Bennett of Newnan, Mary (Willie) Collins of Stone Mountain, & Annie Walden of Decatur; brother: John (Ruby) Elder of Atlanta; uncle: John Elder of Youngstown, Ohio; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives and friends.
