Qualifying begins in cities

Candidate qualifying begins Monday for elections in all of Fayette’s five municipalities.

Candidates can sign up to run and pay qualifying fees at their respective city halls during business hours through Friday. The election is Nov. 3.

Peachtree City’s situation is a bit confusing with three seats for sure, and probably a fourth, up for election this fall.

Scheduled for election are the mayor’s seat, the Post 3 council seat held by Steve Boone and Post 4 seat held by Cyndi Plunkett.

Post 1 Councilman Don Haddix has said he will run for mayor. According to the city charter, Haddix must resign when he qualifies to run since he has more than two years left on his council term.

The special election for the post 1 council seat would be on the Nov. 3 ballot, but an additional qualifying period will be held for that post.

Three city council posts will be on the ballot in Fayetteville--the post 3 seat held by Walt White, the post 4 seat held by Larry Dell and the post 5 spot held by Paul Oddo.

In Tyrone, the post 3 and 4 town council posts, held by Gloria Furr and Grace Caldwell, respectively, will be up for election.

Woolsey will elect a mayor and two council members. Gary Laggis is currently the mayor and Kenneth Wright and Jack Gilson hold the post 1 and 3 council seats that are up for election.

In Brooks, the mayor’s post is up for election, along with council posts l and 2, currently held by Lewis Harper and Jacqueline Carson. Bobby Butler is the long-time mayor of Brooks.

Two other issues will be on the Nov. 3 ballot, too. All county residents will be asked if they support renewing the county’s 1 percent Special Purpose Local Option Sale Tax for six more years.
Tyrone residents will get their say on the issue of Sunday alcoholic drink sales.
