Creek going back down to AAA?

2009-11-16

By Trey Alverson

The Georgia High School Associaton released its initial re-classification numbers Thursday. Fayette, McIntosh, Whitewater and Starr’s Mill have the population to remain in Class AAAA, but Sandy Creek does not. Creek’s enrollment is listed at 1,309, or about 100 students below the AAAA cutoff. School officials have until Nov. 25 to challenge the classification. Creek can apply to play up with the other Fayette schools, but Principal Roy Rabold said Friday he had not decided if he would.

“We’ll look at potential region alignments and make a decision,” Rabold said. All five county high schools have been in the same region over the past two years, which has been great for fans. The new alignment will be for the next four years. There are nine public schools within 11 miles of Sandy Creek: they are McIntosh, Creekside, Northgate, Fayette County, Banneker, Whitewater, Mundy’s Mill, Riverdale and Starr’s Mill.

Every single one of those schools is AAAA -- leaving Creek on an island by itself. The closest AAA schools to Creek are North Clayton (12 miles), Woodward Academy (14 miles) and Jonesboro (14 miles).

J.L Johnson writes: Having one county school in a different region than the other four is bad for the teams, students and fans. The BOE should do a better job drawing the lines so that the populations don't vary so much between different schools. Why are McIntosh and Whitewater overcrowded while Sandy Creek and Fayette County have empty classrooms?
