Tyrone planning spectacular tree lighting Dec. 4

2009-11-20

By Martha Barksdale

Who says Tyrone is not a “bright lights city?” Why, the town will be all aglow Friday Dec. 4 at the annual Christmas Tree Lighting Celebration.
This year’s tree lighting will be held at Shamrock Park on Senoia Road. In previous years, the tree lighting was at Triangle (now Veterans’) Park.

Lynda Owens of the Tyrone Recreation Department says the move will enhance the event. “We have so much more space,” Owens said. “There will be lights around the lake, and it will be really spectacular.”

The festivities will begin at 6 p.m. An old-fashioned sleigh with a top-hatted driver will be giving free rides around the lake. Two of Santa’s elves will be on hand to do face painting and “Christmas hair,” Owens added. Cookies and hot chocolate will be provided by the Fayette Daybreak Rotary Club.

Local school musicians, including the choruses from Burch and Tyrone elementaries and Flat Rock Middle School, along with the Flat Rock Middle School Band, will add to the festive atmosphere, leading up to Santa’s arrival and the lighting of the town Christmas tree at 8 p.m. Santa will then pose for photos and meet with his young fans.

Owens says the tree lighting always draws a big crowd, and this year there is space to accommodate everyone. Parking should not be a problem, she said, with ample space at businesses in the downtown area.
