There will be a familiar voice among the 140 singers that make up the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Gospel Choir, and it will be spotlighted during this weekend’s concert.

Diadra Dorsey of Fayetteville, a first soprano, is a featured soloist on “For Every Mountain” by Kirk Carr during the ASO Gospel Christmas Concert this weekend. The Gospel Choir, singers from metro Atlanta churches and lead by Chelsea Tipton II, perform a spirited program of holiday music.

The first performance was Friday night and another is Saturday at 2 p.m. at Symphony Hall in Atlanta.

Dorsey has been singing with the ASO Gospel Choir for three years, but her musical roots go back to her youth, when she sang at her great-grandfather’s church, Church of God in Christ in Birmingham.

She earns her living, not through music, but at Georgia State University School of Law as the associate director of conflict resolution.

Her spare time is devoted to her singing, however. The ASO choir has been practicing for its Christmas show since October, and she is also a member of the Atlanta Jazz Chorus, which will present a Holiday Jazz Vespers program at the Rialto Center for the Arts on Dec. 12. She performs as part of the Gospel Music Workshop of America and also sings as a featured soloist with the General Missionary Baptist Convention of Georgia Choir.

In addition, Dorsey sings with two church choirs in Atlanta--St. Paul AME and Bethlehem Baptist.

But being busy is nothing new to Dorsey. Her husband, the Rev. Carl W. Dorsey, proudly tells how she went ahead to finish her degree at Clayton State College even while raising their son and daughter.

The Dorseys have been married 30 years, and lived in Fayetteville for 20. They have three granddaughters.

Mrs. Dorsey is a member of the Fayette County Republican Women--which she says she enjoys because of the group’s community service work. Her husband is a member of the Fayette County Republican Party.
