Dr. Weldon L. Odom, 75, died peacefully at his home Friday morning, December 11, 2009, after fighting a brave three-year battle with cancer. The family will receive friends at the Carl J. Mowell & Son Funeral Home, 180 N. Jeff Davis Dr., Fayetteville, GA, from 2:00 PM until 5:00 PM on Sunday, December 13, 2009. A funeral service will be held at 10:00 AM on Monday, December 14, 2009 at National Heights Baptist Church, with a graveside service to follow immediately at Westminster Memorial Gardens, Peachtree City.
A native of Hazlehurst, GA, Dr. Odom was born on September 11, 1934, the son of Theo Odom and the late Johnnie Lou Odom. He was a graduate of Brown High School in Atlanta and the Logan Basic College of Chiropractic in St. Louis, MO. A gifted chiropractor, who served as president of the American Chiropractic Association from 1985 to 1987, Dr. Odom practiced the healing art of chiropractic for 42 years, first in southwest Atlanta and later in Riverdale.
At the age of 27, he was ordained as a deacon at Beecher Hills Baptist Church, where he also taught adult Sunday school. He was a faithful member of the National Heights Baptist Church, where he served on the Board of Deacons and Finance Committee.
Dr. Odom served in the Navy and was stationed at the Naval Air Station (NAS) Jacksonville, Florida, where he met his wife of 51 years, the former Helen Featherston.
In addition to his wife and his father, he is survived by a son and a daughter, the Rev. John L. Odom (Emily) of Greensboro, N.C., and Dr. Joan M. Odom of Avila Beach, Calif., and two grandchildren, Nathaniel and Elizabeth.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to National Heights Baptist Church, 103 Old Norton Road, Fayetteville, GA 30215.
