Dr. John Gordon Alford, Jr., 79, of Peachtree City, GA, passed away from respiratory failure on December 20, 2009. Dr. Alford served in the US Navy during the Korean War. He received his Masters in education from Northwestern University and his PhD from Harvard. He worked in various educational administrative roles for the State of Illinois for over 30 years. He retired to Tallahassee, FL in 1988. He later served in Pakistan with the Peace Corps. He enjoyed Kiwanis and volunteering with other civic and charitable organizations.
Dr. Alford is survived by his wife, Margaret Alford; daughters, Susan Alford of Summerdale, AL and Nancy McCrary and her husband Ken of Grayson, GA; son, John G. Alford and his wife Sherry of Alpharetta; grandchildren, Kenny and Kyle McCrary and John (Parker), Cole and Maggie Alford; brothers, Dr. Donald O. Alford and his wife June of Tallahassee, FL and Dr. Stanley P. Alford and his wife Karen of Denison, TX; many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, December 23, 2009 at 11:00 AM at First Presbyterian Church in Peachtree City with Dr. David Miller officiating. A reception will follow the service in the fellowship hall of the church.
