Council says no to Hyde Park II

2010-01-11

By Trey Alverson

Peachtree City city council unanimously denied an annexation and rezoning request Thursday that would have green-lighted an expansion of the Hyde Park subdivision within redrawn city limits.

Developers petitioned council to annex 48 acres into the city for the construction of 21 new $800,000 homes on two acre lots located east of Peachtree City United Methodist Church’s expansive property along Robinson Road south of Ga. Highway 54 east. The 48 acres are dissected by Camp Creek, which has long been considered the city’s natural eastern border.

The planning commission previously raised serious concerns about access to the property. The developer proposed to replace an existing cart path section near Carriage Lane in phase I of the Hyde Park subdivision with a two-lane road. That idea drew sharp criticism from nearby residents during the public hearing portion of the meeting.

City planner David Rast recommended council deny the request. Council agreed with his advice.

“I have not heard a compelling reason to go against staff and planning commission recommendations on this matter, said new Post 3 councilwoman Kim Learnard.

A representative for the developer said Hyde Investments would work with Fayette County officials to proceed with the planned subdivision on unincorporated county land. Any future development in the area would likely require the paving of Stagecoach Road.

Peachtree City’s new city council members Kim Learnard and Vanessa Fleisch took oaths of office at the beginning of the meeting. Former Post 1 councilman Don Haddix was sworn in as mayor and the Post 2 councilman Doug Sturbaum was elected Mayor Pro-Tempore.
