Warmer weather welcomed

2010-01-12

By Martha Barksdale

Fayette residents still must endure a frigid Tuesday, but warmer temperatures will begin to creep in later this week, bringing an end to the longest cold spell in more than 25 years.

Temperatures Monday finally toppped the freezing point, but were expected to plunge again in the evening. A gradual warm-up is forecast, with temperatures on Thursday and Friday predicted to be in the 50s. But don't get too excited--while the weather will be warmer, heavy rain is expected for the weekend.

A few hours of snow and sleet on Thursday evening gave Fayette and the rest of north Georgia a dusting of the white stuff, enough to alarm some people and delight others.

Fayette schools were closed Friday because of icy patches on some roads, but, on the whole, business continued as usual in the county. Local law enforcement agencies reported no weather-related incidents.

Sub-freezing conditions continued over the weekend, with some shady areas retaining their ice and snow.
