Whitewater High School volleyball standout Helen Menchinger was recently named a finalist to win prepvolleyball.com's National High School Junior of the Year Award.

The 5'10" outside hitter was the driving offensive force behind Whitewater's run to the Georgia AAAA title, Menchinger amassed 501 kills, 266 digs and 75 aces for a 39-14 team that started slowly but was impossible to stop late in the season. She was voted Georgia AAAA Player of the Year.

She was also the Fayette Sports Player of the Year and a first team member of the Fayette Sports All-County Volleyball Team.

According to organizers, to be considered a finalist for National Junior of the Year, a top junior had to make a "massive" impact on her high school team and the state. "Massive" is a subjective term, but at a minimum required that she have statistics that were the best on her team at her position and that she be one of the top players in her state regardless of class. Playing on a team that won a state title, advanced far in the state tournament and or was nationally ranked was also helpful.

Menchinger was one of just four Georgians nominated for the award, alongside Pope's Dani Thompson and Mary Hoey and Woodward's Zoey Morton. In all, 35 players were nominated nationally.
