The Fayette County Lady Tigers suffered a trio of rare out-of-state holiday tournament defeats last month, but Coach John Strickland’s team still looks like the team to beat in Region 5-AAAA.
Senior forwards Sasha Sims and Anma Onyeuku scored 21 and 20 points respectively Tuesday as the Lady Tigers steamrolled Banneker 67-14 in front of a friendly home crowd.
The team has not lost a regular season game in the state of Georgia since 2007.
“Since we got back from the holiday tournaments, we’ve really been practicing hard and that is showing on the court, Strickland said.
“After getting beat a couple times in South Carolina, we’re starting to take defense personally. This team does not like to be scored on.
For the second consecutive game, the Lady Tigers held their opponent to just six first half points.
Starters Sims, Onyeuku, Keyondra Jenkins and Elem Ibiam rested for much of the second half as Fayette continued to force turnovers on defense and pile up points in transition.
“Every night we have to play our game regardless of who our opponent is or what they are doing on the court, Strickland explained.
“We focus on the fundamentals and continue to develop. that is what is important in games like this.
As the visiting Lady Trojans grew more and more frustrated, the game turned physical. Fayette’s stars responded by shooting extremely well from the free throw line. Sims converted 10 of 11 freebies. Onyeuku was six for six from the line.
Fayette was supposed to play Douglas County last Friday, but that game was postponed due to the snow day. Douglas County pushed the Lady Tigers to the brink in last spring’s region tournament. that game has been rescheduled for Feb. 9.
Fayette county is now 12-3 overall and 4-0 in Region 5-AAAA. The Lady Tigers travel to Lithia Springs Friday night before hosting Tri-Cities Saturday.
Fayette guard Jocelyn Hairston missed Tuesday’s game with an ankle injury. Junior Kyra King played well in her place, scoring seven points. |
