Local State Senator Valencia Seay led the 300 strong procession up Tiger Trail, down Hood Avenue, right on Ga. Highway 85 and back toward the high school on Lanier Avenue.
Participants included local churches, the Whitewater High School marching band and several civic organizations. High Schools from Riverdale, Lithonia and Atlanta sent JROTC units to march in the parade.
There was quite a bit of red along the route, cheering the state champion Sandy Creek football team.
The 14-1 Patriots marched near the front.
The Fayette County High School Lady Tigers Basketball Team also participated.
For head coach John Strickland’s team, Fayetteville’s King Day Parade has become a yearly tradition.
“It’s about celebrating the memory and celebrating the moment with the community. It is a good feeling to take that walk through town, Strickland explained.
“I used to march in the parades in Atlanta when I was in college and since I became head coach here five years ago, our varsity team has marched in this parade. The girls love doing it. It was nice that the weather cooperated this year.
