DeCotis says it’s wait and see on state budget |

Fayette County School Superintendent John DeCotis says he will have to wait and see what the state’s final budget is before he begins making plans for the school system’s financial future.
One thing is for sure, there will be less money.
Gov. Sonny Perdue released his final proposed spending plan last Friday. The plan included spending for the last half of this fiscal year, and a complete budget for fiscal year 2011 that will begin July 1.
The budget shows cuts in Quality Basic Education funding, a common thread throughout Perdue’s seven years in office. More furlough days for state employees are being proposed, as well as cuts in health insurance premium subsidies.
Right now, DeCotis said, no one is quite sure what is being proposed, and, in any case, nothing is final until the legislature has its say.
“At this point we haven’t seen the details, DeCotis noted. “We must get information before we can make any decisions. That’s just his proposal, the legislature may come up with a plan of its own.
DeCotis also mentioned proposals that are before the legislature that would affect the way the local tax digest is figured.
“Once that is decided, we’ll know roughly what we’re facing, he said.
For now, the local school system will continue to study the budget and carry on with its plan of saving money every month.
“We’ll wait until March or April when the legislature is finished, then we’ll see what we need to do, DeCotis said.
“We’ll continue assessing the budget, looking at our finances and trying to get a feel for the situation.
