Former clerk charged with felony theft from solicitor's office

A former clerk for the Fayette County Solicitors Office could face up to 10 years in prison if she's found guilty of stealing county funds designated for a pre-trial diversion program, said Fayette County District Attorney Scott Ballard.

Sabrina Miller, 38, of Fayetteville is charged with felony theft by taking after allegedly stealing $3,800 from late 2008 to October 2009 during her employment at the solicitors office.

"An internal review of payments into the pre-trial diversion program revealed certain discrepancies of funds," said Fayette County Solicitor General James Inagawa.

"We immediately investigated those discrepancies and conferred with the District Attorney to refer it to the Georgia Bureau of Investigations to conduct an independent formal investigation. All pending charges are a result of that investigation."

Since the case is pending, Ballard said he is unable to speak on how Miller might have used the stolen funds that go to the program, which is an alternative penalty for mild offenses.

"Pre-trial diversion is a program people pay for to use, instead of getting a court record," said Ballard. "It's for those whose behavior may call for anger management, financial responsibility or
similar offenses."

In addition to the prison sentence Miller may receive, Ballard said she may see more charges when she goes to trial, possibly in May.

Further details of the case will be revealed at that time.
