While most of the Fayette Outdoor YMCA staff is busy gearing up for summer camp, the teens in the Y-Leaders Club are busy with volunteer projects.

These students and leaders, many of whom grew up on Y-Day Camp, believe in the YMCA mission. They volunteer in many ways to make a difference throughout the Fayette County community.

Upcoming events include a mid-February baby to teen clothes drive for Clothes Less Traveled in Peachtree City, a non-profit thrift shop that supports area charities. Another event on the horizon is the American Cancer Society's Relay For Life.

The Y-Leaders Club and Clothes Less Traveled have been involved with Relay for Life for the past four years.

Each year the team raises around $2,000 for the fight against cancer. Over the past two years, they've also had a "smash-the-car" fundraiser on the night of the relay.

The group also sets up, facilitates, and cleans up the event. Club advisors Chris Mothorpe and Zach Stutts co-chair this year's Relay For Life events.

Recent completed projects include mulching at the Sams School, distributing phone books for the Peachtree City Rotary Club and clean-up projects at the YMCA.

The Y-Leaders Club's purpose is to build leadership and character in high school teens, through community service, while upholding the Christian values of the YMCA.

The group meets twice a month at the Fayette Outdoor YMCA and do projects as scheduled.

High school students wanting to make a difference and develop leadership skills are always welcome to join the group. To request an application, or for more information about the Y Leaders Club, please contact Advisor Chris Mothorpe, (770) 843-9548. For information about Y-Day Camp, sign-up begins in late February on the Web site www.atlymcacamps.com
