Fayette soccers teams slaughter first round competition 56-5

By Christopher Dunn

As always, Fayette County is dominating soccer in Georgia. Round one of the state playoffs opened this week with eight teams qualifying. While Our Lady of Mercy waits to play their first game next week, the other seven schools have already kicked off with six of them winning. In fact, just describing it as winning would be unfair. The Fayette teams flexed their muscle, outscoring their opponents by a cumulative score of 56-5.
The region champion and number two ranked McIntosh Chiefs blew out their opening opponent Riverdale 10-0. They will face Lakeside-Dekalb in round two on Tuesday.
The Starr's Mill boys opened up with a 10-0 victory at home against Jonesboro on Tuesday. They will travel to Kell High School on Tuesday to face the 16-3 Longhorns. The Panthers will come into the game ranked number three in the state with Kell at number seven.
The Sandy Creek Patriots opened up the state tourney with a 3-1 victory over Thomson High School. The Patriots will host Columbus in round two on Tuesday.
Whitewater's boys team qualified for state but was knocked out in round one, 4-2, by Forest Park.
Our Lady of Mercy opens the state tournament on Tuesday flaunting a superb 15-2 record. They will host 7-4-3 Calvary Day School from Savannah.
The top ranked and undefeated Whitewater Lady Wildcats made quick work of their round one opponent, blowing out Morrow High School 11-0. They host Kell on Wednesday night.
Second ranked McIntosh handled Tri-Cities 10-0 in their opening game as well. The victory sets up a round two match at home versus number four Pope on Wednesday.
Starr's Mill's Lady Panthers may have entered the state playoffs with a 6-11-1 record, but anyone that follows the club knows they are far better than that mark. The Panthers faced down a brutal non-region schedule, going 6-3 in conference. They proved their mettle with a round one 10-0 thrashing of Forest Park on the road. They will travel to 16-1-2 Marist, the third ranked team in the state, on Wednesday.
