While other teams are starting the state playoffs, our local track and field teams are gearing up for the state track meet. The girls state track meet ran May 3 through 5 in Albany. The boys will be held May 10 through 12 in Jefferson.
Each of the local schools had a number of athletes qualify for the state meet.
Starr's Mill qualified three in the pole vault (Shawna Lehman, Annika Strauss, and Richard Berthold) and one in discus (Cole Griffith).
McIntosh boasts competitors in the discus (Alex Horlak), long jump (Victor Nguyen and Nadia Lee), triple jump (Nadia Lee), 1600 meter run (Brad Hort), 3200 meter run (Brad Hort and Melanie Hamilt), 800 meter run (Taylor Huntley and Joy Cummings), and 4x400 meter relay (Nadia Lee, Nuri Lee, Joy Cummings, Tarna Zander-Velloso).
The Tigers from Fayette County qualified in the 100 meter hurdles (Chinyere Njoku and Sean Daigre), shot put (Akil Hawkins), 100 meter dash (Alex Phillips and Treveyon Herring), 200 meter dash (Alex Phillips and Treveyon Herring), and 4x100 meter relay (Sean Daigre, Treveyon Herring, Alfonso Alexander, Alex Phillips).
Whitewater will compete in the 300 meter hurdles (Bree Handy), 1600 meter run (Mackenzie Nail), 3200 meter run (Mackenzie Nail), discus (Noelle Parker), and 4x400 meter relay (Michael Cofer, Jelani Courtney, Jonathon Womack, Orlando Battle).
Sandy Creek qualified in the 100 meter run (Victoria Parker, Danielle Davis, and DeVon Lewis), 200 meter run (Victoria Parker and DeVon Lewis), 300 meter hurdles (Ariel Truitt and Solomon Bolds), long jump (Kaitlyn Taylor), triple jump (Kaitlyn Taylor), discus (Zachary Booker, Jared Johnson), shot put (Jared Johnson), girls 4x100 meter relay (Kaitlyn Taylor, Victoria Parker, Ariel Truitt, Jordan Carey), girls 4x400 meter relay (Kaitlyn Taylor, Ariel Truitt, Danielle Davis, Jordan Carey), and boys 4x400 meter relay (Jamie Bigby, Ben Williams, Solomon Bolds, RJ Willis).
