A 39 year-old Tyrone man was airlifted to Grady Memorial Hospital after a single vehicle accident left him with serious burns and other injuries on Tuesday night.
According to the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office, Traffic Enforcement Section, the crash occurred at around 8:30 p.m. on Ga. Hwy. 74, near the Fulton County line in unincorporated Fayette County. Todd C. Stevenson was driving a 1996 Chevrolet Corvette traveling north on Ga. Highway 74 at a high rate of speed and swerved off the roadway to avoid striking two slower moving vehicles that he had overtaken.
After leaving the roadway, Stevenson lost control of his vehicle which continued to slide out of control before striking a telephone pole and stopping. His car burst into flames and Stevenson was trapped in the vehicle. Fayette County Fire Department personnel arrived at the crash location and extinguished the fire before the vehicle was totally consumed and extricated Stevenson from the car.
He was taken via Air Medical Ambulance to Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta to be treated for his injuries. The Sheriff's Department is still investigating the incident.
